Jon is an alumnus of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (MMus, cello) and the University of Manchester (MusB). Since graduating from the UoM in 2014, Jon has been principal cellist of orchestras such as the Arch Sinfonia, the Asyla Ensemble, Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra, Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra, the London Graduate Orchestra and Surrey Opera Company and a member of Constella OperaBallet, An Assembly, Apartment House, Untold Orchestra, the Melos Sinfonia and the Orion Orchestra. Previously Jon has been principal cellist of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra and the University of Manchester Symphony Orchestra and has performed under world renowned conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Neville Marriner and Sir Colin Davis. Jon has given numerous public recitals across the UK and is a vastly experienced chamber musician — formerly a member of the Theodore Quartet, Shellard Clarinet Trio and Abraxas Ensemble, Jon is currently cellist in the Vine Quartet.
Jon is also a regular session musician and since 2020 has been set up to record both audio and video remotely from home. Jon works frequently with composer/producer James William Blades, including playing on his score to Beyonce's 2020 film Black is King. Jon also releases his own original music under the name "MultiCelli" — these multi-tracked cello ensemble works, for which Jon is the sole performer, are co-written and produced by composer Oliver Mayo (for more info see COMPOSING/ARRANGING and multicelliartist.com). See MEDIA for examples of Jon's many recordings and imdb.me/jongibsonmusic for film/TV credits.
Jon is a prolific and versatile performer noted for his musicality, passion and enthusiasm for music of all kinds; whether it's Bach, Berlioz, Birtwistle or the Beatles.
